I started coating containment areas at a local paper mill when I was 17. By the time that facility was mostly shuttered a few years ago we had applied Belzona® to much of the plant. We did containment areas, walkways, wash tanks and anything that was affected by the sulfuric acid that was part of their process. Over the 30 years we spent at that facility an awful lot was taught to me about facility maintenance and chemical attack. Oh, and leaks. Acid has a way of making things leak.
Containment areas are there to protect the environment. The EPA has said that a coating needs to hold a spill for 72 hours and most coatings will do just that. However, Belzona®’s coatings are rated for a 52 week immersion. It is unlikely that you will have to replace the coating after a chemical spill as is the case with many other coatings.
Deterioration of chemical containment areas is often caused in the following ways;
- Acid attack
- pH reduction
- Carbonation
- Sulphate attack
- Caustic attack
- Microbial degradation
- Corrosion of reinforcement
- Abrasive wear
